Puppet Movement Director, Quixote Nuevo

Estela Garcia is a Los Angeles–based theatre artist, director, and community engagement practitioner specializing in ensemble-based physical theatre, puppetry, and mask performance. She teaches at CalArts, Center Theatre Group, and Angel City Improv, and is visiting faculty at Dell’Arte International, where she also trained. Her original work—rooted in visual storytelling—has been featured in the LA Mime Festival and the LAX Performance Festival, where she performed her acclaimed piece Remedios Varo: La Alquimista, described as “poetry in motion.” Recent credits include Puppet Consultant for the praised tour of Quixote Nuevo (South Coast Rep, Seattle Rep, Portland Center Stage); Puppetry Director for Rogue Artists Ensemble’s Schlitzie: Alive and Inside; and Puppet Director for El Largo Camino Hoy at South Coast Repertory. She directed Hija de Mi Madre, which won multiple awards at the Short+Sweet Hollywood Latinx Festival, and was Movement Director for I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter at Greenway Court Theatre. Garcia also worked with El Teatro Campesino on Popol Vuh: Heart of Heaven. A 2023 Director’s Lab West alum and 2024 Associate Producer, Garcia is developing new commissioned work for Center Theatre Group. Quixote Nuevo marks her Oregon Shakespeare Festival debut.
